Description
54″ Wide 225g Polyester Wadding for Larger Cushion Wrapping
This 54″ wide 225g (8oz) polyester wadding fibre cushion wrap provides extra softness, loft and a fuller finish around larger upholstery foam cushions and wider furniture projects.
With approximately 20mm loft, this 8oz polyester fibre wrap provides noticeably more build-up than lighter 2½oz and 4½oz wadding without the additional bulk of heavier 10½oz or 14oz grades.
Often referred to as 8oz Dacron, wide Dacron cushion wrap, polyester cushion wrap or foam wrap, the generous 54″ width makes it particularly useful for sofa cushions, bench seating, window seats, headboards and broad upholstery panels.

What Is 8oz Polyester Wadding Used For?
225g polyester wadding is used around upholstery foam to add softness, loft and a fuller cushion profile.
The foam provides the main structural support and shape, while the polyester fibre wrap creates a softer outer layer between the foam and upholstery fabric.
This helps soften the defined edges of cut foam and creates a more rounded, comfortably padded appearance.
Typical applications include:
- Large sofa seat cushions
- Armchair cushions
- Bench seating
- Window seat cushions
- Wide chair pads
- Headboards
- Upholstered furniture panels
- Footstools and ottomans
- Caravan and motorhome seating
- Campervan cushions
- Boat and marine upholstery
- Furniture refurbishment
Why Choose 225g 8oz Dacron Cushion Wrap?
Fuller Than General-Purpose Wadding
8oz polyester wadding provides more loft than lighter 2½oz and 4½oz fibre wrap.
It is a good choice where a noticeably fuller and softer cushion finish is wanted without moving to the heavier 10½oz or maximum-loft 14oz grades.
Softens Foam Edges
Freshly cut upholstery foam naturally has fairly defined corners and edges.
Wrapping the foam with polyester wadding helps soften these edges beneath the cover and creates a smoother transition between the supportive foam core and outer fabric.
Adds Approximately 20mm of Loft
The polyester fibre provides approximately 20mm loft before compression, creating additional softness around the foam and helping achieve a fuller upholstered appearance.
The foam should still be correctly sized for the cushion cover. Dacron should enhance the shape and finish rather than compensate for an undersized foam interior.
Why Choose 54″ Wide Polyester Wadding?
The 54″ width is designed for larger cushions and broader upholstery projects where narrower 27″ or 36″ rolls may require additional joins or cutting.
It is particularly useful for:
- Large sofa cushions
- Wide bench seating
- Window seats
- Headboards
- Large furniture backs
- Broad upholstery panels
- Caravan and motorhome seating
- Marine seating
Using a wider roll can make larger upholstery projects quicker to wrap and can provide more continuous coverage across broad foam surfaces.
For smaller cushions and narrower jobs, a 27″ or 36″ wide polyester wadding roll may reduce material waste.
Bond Dacron Wadding Securely to the Foam
Polyester wadding should be securely bonded to the foam using Livedale Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive.
This is particularly useful when working with wide 54″ Dacron because keeping a larger area of fibre correctly positioned while wrapping the foam can otherwise be difficult.
If the polyester wadding is left loose, it can move as the cushion is pushed into its cover or while upholstery fabric is fitted. This can create folds, bunching or uneven areas of padding beneath the finished fabric.
Bonding the wadding securely helps:
- Keep the Dacron evenly positioned
- Prevent movement during assembly
- Reduce folding and bunching
- Maintain consistent padding across broad surfaces
- Keep edges and corners evenly wrapped
- Produce a smoother finished cushion shape
- Make larger wrapped foam sections easier to handle
Apply a light, even coat of Livedale Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive in accordance with the product instructions and carefully position the polyester wadding.
Avoid saturating the fibre. The adhesive should hold the Dacron securely while allowing it to retain its soft loft.
Is 8oz Polyester Wadding the Right Weight?
8oz polyester wadding is a useful medium-heavy option where more fullness is required than a general-purpose cushion wrap.
As a general guide:
2½oz – light padding and subtle edge softening
4½oz – general-purpose cushion wrapping
8oz – fuller cushion wrapping with additional loft
10½oz – heavier wrapping and generous padding
14oz – maximum loft and the fullest padded finish
If you are working with an existing cushion cover, remember that heavier wadding adds more bulk around the foam.

Using 8oz Polyester Wadding with Foam and Stockinette
For replacement cushions, start with correctly selected Foam Cut to Size to provide the supportive cushion core.
Bond the 8oz Dacron securely around the foam using Livedale Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive.
Once wrapped, Stockinette can be fitted over the cushion interior. Stockinette helps contain the wrapped assembly and reduces friction when sliding the cushion into its fabric cover.
A typical cushion construction is:
Foam core → spray adhesive → polyester wadding → stockinette → cushion cover
The foam provides support, the polyester wadding provides softness and loft, and the stockinette helps with handling and cover fitting.
Wide 8oz Dacron for Upholstery
54″ wide 225g polyester wadding is suitable for professional upholsterers, furniture manufacturers, repair workshops and customers carrying out their own cushion and furniture refurbishment.
The combination of a generous 54″ width and fuller 8oz construction makes it particularly useful for larger sofa cushions, bench seating, headboards and wide upholstery projects.
