Cardboard and fibreboard are used to shape, line and close suitable areas of upholstered furniture. They can help create smooth backs, arm panels, facings and concealed sections beneath the final upholstery materials.

These products are intended primarily for shaping, panel work, backing and finishing. They should not be confused with structural timber boards such as plywood, MDF or chipboard, and they should not be expected to replace a damaged furniture frame or carry the weight of a seated user.

The correct material depends on the shape being covered, the rigidity required and how the finished panel will be attached.

This relatively thin cardboard can be cut and shaped for suitable furniture backs, arms, panels and templates.

The cardboard provides a light and flexible foundation. It is particularly useful where the material must follow a gentle curve or shaped furniture profile without adding the weight and rigidity of a thicker board.

Cardboard for Upholstered Furniture Backs

Cardboard sheets can be used to close suitable outside backs after the internal upholstery work has been completed.

The sheet helps create a smooth foundation beneath the final outside-back fabric.

Before fitting the cardboard:

  • Complete all internal spring, webbing and filling work
  • Remove loose staples and tacks
  • Check that the frame is sound
  • Make sure no tools or loose components remain inside
  • Confirm that mechanisms and cables remain accessible
  • Plan the outside-back fabric attachment
  • Check whether a removable panel or fixed finish is required

Cut the cardboard so it follows the intended furniture outline without pushing beyond the outer edge of the frame.

The sheet should sit smoothly without deep buckling or unsupported areas that may become visible through the finished fabric.

Where the back has a pronounced curve, produce a paper or cardboard trial pattern first rather than repeatedly trimming the finished sheet and hoping confidence will eventually replace measurement.

Cardboard for Outside Arms

Thin cardboard can help form a smooth outside-arm panel where the furniture construction provides a suitable frame around the perimeter.

It may be positioned over the frame before the final outside-arm fabric is fitted.

The panel can help:

  • Cover open frame areas
  • Create a smoother fabric foundation
  • Reduce visible shadows from internal components
  • Maintain the intended arm profile
  • Separate the outer fabric from the internal upholstery

The cardboard should not interfere with moving mechanisms, recliner cables or removable furniture components.

Cardboard for Curved and Profiled Areas

The 1.2mm sheet is useful where a relatively flexible material must follow a shaped furniture section.

Gentle curves can normally be formed progressively rather than forcing the complete bend at one point.

When working around a curve:

  • Keep the sheet square to the frame
  • Bend it gradually
  • Avoid sharp creases
  • Support the complete panel
  • Establish the fixing points before final attachment
  • Check that the material is not under excessive tension
  • Make relief cuts only where the design genuinely requires them

A sharp crease can remain visible beneath the upholstery fabric, particularly where the outer material is thin or closely fitted.

Do not attempt to force cardboard around an extremely tight profile where a more suitable shaped panel, fibreboard or alternative construction method is required.

Cardboard for Upholstery Templates

Cardboard sheets can be used to make reusable templates for foam, fabric, fibreboard and furniture panels.

A cardboard template can be particularly useful for:

  • Shaped chair backs

Mark the template clearly with:

Where the template represents the finished size rather than the cutting size, state that clearly.

A beautifully made template labelled only “chair bit” tends to become less useful several months later.

Fibreboard and Millboard Sheets

Both products are supplied in packs of 10 sheets measuring approximately 1240mm × 780mm.

Fibreboard provides a firmer panel than the thinner upholstery cardboard and can be used on suitable furniture arms, backs, shaped areas and templates.

It remains a panel and shaping material rather than a substitute for structural timber.

1.5mm Fibreboard Sheets

The 1.5mm fibreboard provides a balance between flexibility and panel firmness.

It can be considered for:

  • Furniture backs
  • Outside arms
  • Shaped upholstery panels
  • Facings
  • Concealed furniture sections
  • Headboard components
  • Template making
  • Production patterns
  • Suitable curved areas
  • Panel reinforcement where only modest rigidity is required

The thinner fibreboard is generally easier to form around gentle profiles than a thicker sheet.

It can provide a cleaner and more substantial foundation than ordinary cardboard where the finished panel needs additional body.

Before ordering, consider whether the sheet must:

  • Follow a curve
  • Span an open frame section
  • Remain flat
  • Accept staples or another fixing
  • Support upholstery material
  • Form part of a removable panel
  • Be cut repeatedly from one template

A thicker product is not automatically preferable. Where flexibility is needed, unnecessary thickness can make fitting more difficult and place greater force on the fixing points.

3mm Fibreboard Sheets

The 3mm fibreboard provides a firmer and more rigid panel than the 1.5mm product.

It may be useful for:

  • Flatter furniture panels
  • Firmer outside backs
  • Suitable headboard panels
  • Furniture facings
  • Template making
  • Sample boards
  • Areas requiring greater panel stiffness
  • Suitable workshop and furniture-production applications

The increased thickness can help the sheet remain flatter across a suitable frame opening, but it also makes it less willing to follow tight curves.

Check the available depth around the panel edge. A thicker board may alter how the final upholstery material lies against the surrounding frame.

It may also require a different cutting method, fixing length or edge treatment from the 1.5mm sheet.

Fibreboard for Upholstered Headboards

Fibreboard can be used in suitable headboard constructions where a firm panel is required over or within a supporting timber frame.

The headboard design must still include adequate structural support and appropriate fixing points.

Fibreboard alone should not be relied upon to:

  • Carry the complete headboard weight
  • Hold mounting struts without reinforcement
  • Replace structural timber rails
  • Accept heavily loaded wall brackets
  • Support a person leaning against an inadequately framed panel

Where headboard struts, wall connectors or mounting brackets are required, they should be fixed into suitable timber or another properly designed structural component.

Fibreboard for Furniture Facings and Panels

Fibreboard can create a flat or shaped foundation beneath foam, wadding and upholstery fabric.

The board should be supported adequately around its perimeter.

Where a panel is expected to withstand repeated impact, heavy pressure or significant movement, the complete construction should be reviewed rather than simply increasing the fibreboard thickness.

Fibreboard for Templates

Fibreboard can produce more durable templates than thin cardboard where a pattern will be used repeatedly.

It may be selected for:

  • Production foam shapes
  • Repeated furniture panels
  • Cushion patterns
  • Router or cutting guides where suitable
  • Factory cutting references
  • Left- and right-hand furniture components

Smooth the cut edge sufficiently for the intended template use.

A rough or inaccurate template edge will faithfully reproduce the same rough inaccuracy on every component cut from it. Consistency is useful only when the original shape is right.

Cardboard Back-Tacking Strips

Our pre-cut cardboard strips measure approximately:

  • ½ inch wide
  • 40 inches long

They are supplied in boxes of 1,000 strips and are intended for back-tacking upholstery fabric to create a clean, straight edge.

Cardboard tack strip is commonly used on suitable:

  • Outside furniture backs
  • Outside arms
  • Upholstered panels
  • Headboard edges
  • Straight fabric returns
  • Concealed furniture seams
  • Production upholstery

The strip provides a straight line around which the fabric can turn, helping produce a more consistent upholstered edge.

Creating a Straight Upholstery Edge

Position the fabric and cardboard strip according to the upholstery method being used.

The strip should follow the intended finished line accurately. Any curve, dip or misalignment in the strip can be reflected in the final fabric edge.

Before fixing:

  • Mark the required line
  • Check the fabric direction
  • Confirm the seam or fold allowance
  • Make sure the strip is not twisted
  • Align adjoining lengths carefully
  • Keep staples or tacks evenly positioned
  • Avoid damaging the visible fabric
  • Test the fold before completing the full run

The cardboard strip should lie flat against the furniture frame.

Do not place fixings so close to the edge that the strip tears or pulls away.

Joining Cardboard Tack Strips

Where more than one strip is required along a long furniture edge, position the join carefully.

The two ends should meet neatly without overlapping enough to create a visible lump beneath the fabric.

Avoid leaving a large gap that could cause the finished edge to dip.

Where the line changes direction, cut and position the strip so the corner remains crisp without building unnecessary thickness.

Cardboard Strip or Metal Tacking Strip?

Cardboard back-tacking strip and metal tacking strip can both help create neat upholstery edges, but they work differently.

Cardboard strip is generally used as part of a folded or back-tacked fabric edge. It provides a straight foundation and is fixed with suitable staples or tacks.

Metal tacking strip contains teeth or fixing points that grip the upholstery fabric and can be used to create concealed edges on suitable backs and arms.

The correct product depends on:

  • Furniture design
  • Fabric thickness
  • Edge position
  • Required fixing method
  • Straight or curved application
  • Whether metal teeth are appropriate
  • Traditional or production upholstery method

Cardboard or Fibreboard: Which Should You Choose?

Choose the material according to the required flexibility and firmness.

Choose 1.2mm upholstery cardboard when:

  • A lightweight panel is required
  • The material must follow a gentle curve
  • A disposable or light-duty template is needed
  • The finished section does not require substantial rigidity
  • The panel will be fully supported around its perimeter
  • Easy hand cutting is important

Choose 1.5mm fibreboard when:

  • Greater firmness than cardboard is required
  • Some flexibility must remain
  • A more durable panel or template is needed
  • The material must follow a moderate profile
  • The finished panel needs additional body

Choose 3mm fibreboard when:

  • A firmer, flatter panel is required
  • The area is less sharply curved
  • A more durable production template is needed
  • Greater panel stiffness is useful
  • The surrounding construction can accommodate the thickness

Choose cardboard tack strip when:

  • A straight back-tacked fabric edge is required
  • The product will be fixed along a frame rail
  • A narrow strip is more practical than cutting full sheets
  • Repeated production work justifies pre-cut lengths

Do not select solely by price or sheet thickness. The easiest material to fit correctly will usually produce a better result than an unnecessarily heavy board forced into an unsuitable shape.

Cardboard, Fibreboard and Structural Support

Cardboard and thin fibreboard should not be described as load-bearing furniture materials.

They can:

  • Form panels
  • Cover openings
  • Shape upholstered sections
  • Support lightweight upholstery layers
  • Create templates
  • Provide backing beneath fabric
  • Help produce clean finished edges

They should not replace:

  • Timber frame rails
  • Plywood structural panels
  • Springs
  • Webbing
  • Seat platforms
  • Headboard mounting timber
  • Proper furniture joints
  • Structural repair work

If a chair, sofa or headboard has a damaged frame, repair the structure before fitting the cardboard or fibreboard covering.

A neat new panel over a broken rail is merely a tidier way of hiding the problem.

Measuring Furniture Panels

Measure the actual fixing area rather than only the visible opening.

Record:

  • Maximum width
  • Maximum height
  • Curved or profiled edges
  • Frame-rail width
  • Fixing allowance
  • Fabric turning allowance
  • Position of mechanisms
  • Cable and bracket locations
  • Left- and right-hand differences
  • Number of identical panels

Create a paper or waste-card template for complicated shapes.

Offer the template to the furniture and mark any adjustments before transferring it to the finished sheet.

Where two sides appear identical, check them independently. Older and handmade furniture is not always perfectly symmetrical, and previous repairs can alter one side.

Marking Cardboard and Fibreboard

Use a pencil, suitable marker or chalk that remains visible without transferring to the final upholstery material.

Mark on the concealed face where possible.

Include:

  • Cutting line
  • Finished edge
  • Fixing line
  • Centre line
  • Orientation
  • Panel name
  • Quantity
  • Material thickness
  • Any required cut-outs

Use a square, straightedge or existing template for accurate lines.

For curved components, use a flexible pattern, compass, batten or transferred furniture profile rather than drawing the curve by eye.

Cutting Upholstery Cardboard

Thin cardboard can normally be cut using sharp shears or a suitable knife on a protected cutting surface.

For straight cuts:

  • Use a metal straightedge
  • Keep hands clear of the blade
  • Make controlled passes
  • Avoid trying to cut deeply in one movement
  • Support the complete sheet
  • Replace blunt blades promptly

A blunt knife can drag and tear the cardboard edge, leaving an uneven line beneath the upholstery fabric.

For curved cuts, use suitable shears or several controlled knife cuts.

Do not fold the cardboard sharply merely to make it easier to reach with the blade, as the crease may remain in the finished panel.

Cutting Fibreboard and Millboard

The suitable cutting method depends on the fibreboard thickness, density and shape required.

Depending on the product and workshop equipment, cutting may involve:

  • A heavy-duty knife
  • Repeated scored passes
  • Strong shears for suitable thin material
  • A fine-tooth saw
  • A powered cutting tool suitable for sheet material

Test the method on a waste edge first.

Support the sheet so it does not split or break near the end of the cut.

When using powered equipment, control dust and follow the tool manufacturer’s safety instructions.

Smooth any rough edges where they could mark the fabric, wadding or foam placed over the board.

Making Cut-Outs and Openings

Furniture panels may require openings for:

  • Recliner cables
  • Hinges

  • Electrical controls

Mark the opening accurately and check its position against the actual component before cutting.

A hole cut generously “just in case” usually remains generous long after the reason has been forgotten.

Fixing Cardboard and Fibreboard to Furniture

The fixing method depends on the panel, furniture frame and material thickness.

  • Suitable adhesive
  • Screws with appropriate washers
  • Brackets or retaining trims
  • A combination of methods

The board should be secured to sound timber or another suitable supporting surface.

Do not staple into an unsupported edge or thin damaged rail.

Using Upholstery Staples

Select a staple series and length compatible with the gun, board thickness and furniture frame.

The staple must penetrate the timber sufficiently without passing through a thin rail or damaging the visible face.

Space the staples closely enough to prevent the panel lifting between fixings, but not so closely that the board is weakened by a continuous perforated line.

Keep the staple crown flat against the board without crushing or cutting through it.

Using Upholstery Tacks

Traditional tacks can be used where the furniture method or restoration project calls for a hand-driven fixing.

Choose a tack size suitable for the board, frame and intended load.

Drive the tack accurately without breaking the panel edge.

Traditional tacks may be preferable where:

  • The furniture is being restored using established methods
  • The fixing may need to be removed later
  • Pneumatic equipment is unsuitable
  • The frame construction suits a hand-driven fastener

Using Adhesive

A compatible adhesive may help secure or position a panel, but it should be selected carefully.

Apply foam or wadding smoothly without creating ridges.

Covering Panels with Upholstery Fabric

Cut the fabric with enough allowance to wrap, tension and secure it behind the panel or frame.

Consider:

  • Pattern direction
  • Fabric grain

  • Fixing allowance
  • Panel thickness
  • Whether the reverse will remain visible

Work from the centre towards the corners, maintaining even tension.

Do not pull one side so tightly that the panel bends or the pattern moves out of alignment.

Check the visible face repeatedly during fitting. It is easier to correct one misplaced staple than eighty-seven of them.

Protecting Panel Edges

Rough or sharp panel edges can mark the fabric placed over them.

Depending on the application, the edge may be:

  • Smoothed
  • Lightly rounded
  • Covered with tape
  • Wrapped with wadding
  • Protected by a fabric turn
  • Positioned behind a frame rail
  • Finished with a suitable upholstery profile

Do not leave loose fibreboard particles beneath a pale or thin upholstery covering.

Where the edge will remain exposed inside the furniture, finish it neatly and remove loose material.

Storing Cardboard and Fibreboard Sheets

Store sheets flat in a clean, dry workroom.

Protect them from:

  • Damp
  • Water
  • Excessive humidity
  • Direct heat
  • Heavy objects
  • Bent storage
  • Adhesive overspray
  • Oil and grease
  • Dirt
  • Damaged corners

Sheets stored upright without adequate support can bow or develop damaged edges.

Keep cardboard strips in their original box or another long, dry container so they remain straight.

Label partial packs by material and thickness. A 1.5mm and 3mm fibreboard offcut can look remarkably similar until the wrong one has been cut to an unusually complicated shape.
