Cardboard and fibreboard are used to shape, line and close suitable areas of upholstered furniture. They can help create smooth backs, arm panels, facings and concealed sections beneath the final upholstery materials.
These products are intended primarily for shaping, panel work, backing and finishing. They should not be confused with structural timber boards such as plywood, MDF or chipboard, and they should not be expected to replace a damaged furniture frame or carry the weight of a seated user.
The correct material depends on the shape being covered, the rigidity required and how the finished panel will be attached.

Where the back has a pronounced curve, produce a paper or cardboard trial pattern first rather than repeatedly trimming the finished sheet and hoping confidence will eventually replace measurement.

It may be positioned over the frame before the final outside-arm fabric is fitted.

Where a panel is expected to withstand repeated impact, heavy pressure or significant movement, the complete construction should be reviewed rather than simply increasing the fibreboard thickness.

A rough or inaccurate template edge will faithfully reproduce the same rough inaccuracy on every component cut from it. Consistency is useful only when the original shape is right.

Cardboard tack strip is commonly used on suitable:
The strip provides a straight line around which the fabric can turn, helping produce a more consistent upholstered edge.
Position the fabric and cardboard strip according to the upholstery method being used.
The strip should follow the intended finished line accurately. Any curve, dip or misalignment in the strip can be reflected in the final fabric edge.
Before fixing:
The cardboard strip should lie flat against the furniture frame.
Do not place fixings so close to the edge that the strip tears or pulls away.
Where more than one strip is required along a long furniture edge, position the join carefully.
The two ends should meet neatly without overlapping enough to create a visible lump beneath the fabric.
Avoid leaving a large gap that could cause the finished edge to dip.
Where the line changes direction, cut and position the strip so the corner remains crisp without building unnecessary thickness.
Cardboard back-tacking strip and metal tacking strip can both help create neat upholstery edges, but they work differently.
Cardboard strip is generally used as part of a folded or back-tacked fabric edge. It provides a straight foundation and is fixed with suitable staples or tacks.
Metal tacking strip contains teeth or fixing points that grip the upholstery fabric and can be used to create concealed edges on suitable backs and arms.

Do not select solely by price or sheet thickness. The easiest material to fit correctly will usually produce a better result than an unnecessarily heavy board forced into an unsuitable shape.

A neat new panel over a broken rail is merely a tidier way of hiding the problem.
