An adhesive that performs well on timber may not be suitable for flexible foam. Likewise, a cleaner intended for finished leather should not automatically be used on suede, fabric, vinyl or an unidentified upholstery surface.

Aerosol products provide fast and convenient application, particularly across broad or irregularly shaped surfaces. Their suitability still depends on the material, working conditions and instructions supplied for the exact product.

Upholstery Spray Adhesives

Upholstery spray adhesive is commonly used for bonding flexible foam, polyester wadding, fabric, lining materials and other suitable upholstery components.

Not every spray adhesive is suitable for every combination of materials. Some foams, plastics, vinyls, painted surfaces and synthetic fabrics can react badly with an unsuitable solvent or adhesive.

Before beginning the main job:

  • Check both materials are compatible with the adhesive
  • Test on a waste or concealed section
  • Make sure the surfaces are clean and dry
  • Follow the specified spraying distance

  • Observe the stated open or tack time

Applying too much adhesive can be as troublesome as applying too little. A heavy wet layer may soak through fabric, soften foam, delay drying or create an uneven bond.

Bonding Foam to Foam

Foam-to-foam bonding is frequently required when making cushions, building shaped components, adding bolsters or joining foam sections.

The cut surfaces should be reasonably clean and free from loose foam particles. Position the pieces carefully before the adhesive reaches its final grab because some products provide little opportunity for adjustment once the surfaces meet.

When joining foam:

  • Keep the surfaces aligned
  • Avoid stretching one piece while bonding
  • Apply adhesive evenly
  • Allow the correct tack time
  • Bring the surfaces together progressively
  • Apply light, even pressure
  • Avoid crushing the foam while the bond forms
  • Allow curing time before cutting or covering

The adhesive line should not create a hard ridge through the finished cushion. Excessive adhesive can stiffen the joint and may become noticeable beneath a close-fitting cover.

For larger cushions, use a foam grade and construction appropriate to the intended application rather than attempting to build the complete item from numerous small offcuts simply because glue is available.

Bonding Polyester Wadding to Foam

Spray adhesive can be used to hold suitable polyester wadding in position around a foam cushion before stockinette or the finished cover is fitted.

Apply only enough adhesive to prevent the wadding from moving during handling. Saturating the wadding can flatten it, create hard patches and interfere with the soft finish it is intended to provide.

Plan the position of joins carefully. Wadding seams placed across a prominent face may become visible through a close-fitting upholstery cover.

The finished wadding should remain smooth, evenly tensioned and free from folds.

High-Temperature Spray Adhesive

Browse high-temperature spray adhesive for suitable automotive, campervan, vehicle headlining and other projects where surfaces may experience elevated temperatures.

Vehicle roofs and enclosed interiors can become considerably warmer than domestic furniture. An ordinary general-purpose adhesive may therefore be unsuitable for headlining or trim exposed to sustained heat.

A product described as high temperature should still be checked against:

  • The materials being bonded
  • The expected operating temperature
  • The vehicle or panel location
  • Whether one-sided or two-sided application is required
  • Open and curing times
  • The existing surface or backing
  • The manufacturer’s technical instructions

Old vehicle headlining foam and adhesive residue should be removed before fitting replacement material. Applying new adhesive over degraded foam normally bonds the new covering to material that is already falling apart.

Non-Chlorinated Spray Adhesive

Non-chlorinated spray adhesive provides an alternative where a product formulated without chlorinated solvents is required.

This description does not mean that the aerosol is harmless, non-flammable or suitable for use without ventilation. The exact hazard information and required precautions must still be taken from the product label and safety data.

Check the adhesive’s compatibility, bond strength, temperature performance and application method rather than choosing it solely because it is described as non-chlorinated.

Fabric Protector Spray

Fabric protector spray can be applied to suitable upholstery fabrics to help reduce the immediate absorption of some spills and make routine maintenance easier.

It should not be described as making furniture stain-proof or waterproof.

Performance can depend on:

  • Fabric fibre and construction
  • Existing treatments
  • Amount applied
  • Coverage consistency
  • Drying and curing conditions
  • Type of spill
  • Time before the spill is treated
  • Wear and future cleaning

Test the protector on a concealed area before treating the complete item. Some products can alter the shade, feel or appearance of certain fabrics.

Do not use a general fabric cleaner on velvet, silk, suede, leather or other specialist materials unless the product instructions specifically confirm suitability.

Solvent Cleaner

Solvent cleaner may be used for removing compatible adhesive residues and cleaning suitable workroom surfaces or equipment.

It should not be treated as a general upholstery cleaner.

It should be kept away from surfaces that will later be painted, stained, glued, lacquered or otherwise refinished unless the product is specifically intended for that process.

Silicone contamination can spread easily and may interfere with later adhesion or finishing.

Fabric and leather are different materials and require different treatment. Products should be selected according to the exact upholstery surface rather than grouped together under the optimistic heading of “it cleans things”.

Fabric Care Products

Fabric care products can be used on suitable textile upholstery for routine maintenance and treating appropriate marks.

Before applying any fabric cleaner, identify the covering where possible. Upholstery materials may be made from natural fibres, synthetic fibres or blends and may already carry stain-resistant or other surface treatments.

Check:

  • Manufacturer’s cleaning code
  • Fibre composition
  • Colourfastness
  • Whether the fabric is wet-cleanable
  • Whether the product requires dilution
  • Whether residue must be rinsed or removed
  • Drying requirements
  • Suitability for delicate, brushed or pile fabrics

Always test on a concealed section first.

Avoid saturating cushions. Excess liquid can pass through the cover and into foam, fibre, feather or other upholstery fillings, considerably increasing the drying time and potentially leaving odour or water marks.

Leather Cleaning Products

Leather cleaner should be chosen for the type and finish of leather.

Finished, protected leather may tolerate products that would be unsuitable for aniline leather, nubuck, suede or unfinished hides.

Before cleaning leather:

  • Identify the leather type where possible
  • Check the furniture manufacturer’s instructions
  • Remove loose surface dust
  • Test the product in a concealed area
  • Use a clean, suitable cloth
  • Avoid soaking seams and perforations
  • Do not scrub aggressively
  • Allow the leather to dry naturally
  • Apply conditioner only where appropriate

Do not use household detergent, furniture polish, solvent cleaner or improvised mixtures without confirming suitability. Leather finishes can be permanently altered by an unsuitable product.

Leather Cream and Conditioner

Leather cream can help nourish and maintain suitable finished leather, depending on the individual product formulation.

It may improve the appearance of dry or tired-looking leather, but it cannot repair:

  • Torn leather
  • Deep cracking
  • Peeling artificial leather
  • Failed surface coatings
  • Broken seams
  • Missing material
  • Structural damage beneath the cover

Apply a small amount and work it evenly across the surface as instructed. Excess product can leave the leather greasy, patchy or prone to attracting dust.

Conditioning too frequently can be as unhelpful as never conditioning at all. Follow the product guidance rather than applying another coat whenever the tin happens to be within reach.

Leather Recolouring Balm

Leather recolouring balm can help reduce the appearance of suitable faded, worn or lightly scratched areas on compatible leather finishes.

The balm should be selected as closely as possible to the existing colour and tested before wider application.

It is principally a cosmetic treatment. It will not restore severely damaged leather or repair a failed synthetic surface.

Before use:

  • Clean the surface with a compatible product
  • Allow it to dry
  • Test the colour
  • Apply sparingly
  • Blend beyond the visibly worn area where instructed
  • Allow proper drying or curing
  • Buff or finish according to the directions

Older leather may have changed colour through sunlight, body oils, cleaning and wear. Matching the original colour name may therefore produce a different result from matching the furniture as it appears today.

Fabric and Leather Care Kits

Care kits provide related products intended to be used together as a maintenance system.

Check exactly what is included and whether each component is suitable for the furniture.

A leather care kit should not be used on vinyl merely because vinyl has a leather-grain appearance. Similarly, a fabric kit should not be assumed suitable for every textile fibre and finish.

Following the supplied process in the correct order normally produces a more consistent result than mixing unrelated cleaners, protectors and conditioners.

PVA and Hot Melt Adhesives

PVA Wood Glue

The glue-stick diameter must match the gun. A 12mm stick is not intended for every glue gun simply because it looks roughly close enough.

Hot Melt Glue Sticks

Hot melt glue sticks are available in different diameters and formulations.

Check compatibility with:

  • The glue gun
  • The operating temperature
  • The materials being joined
  • The required setting speed
  • The colour of the adhesive
  • The flexibility required
  • The expected service temperature

Store glue sticks in a clean, dry environment. Dust and debris on the surface can be drawn into the gun and may interfere with smooth feeding.

Do not mix incompatible stick sizes or force a partially fitting stick into the tool.

Choosing the Correct Upholstery Adhesive

No one adhesive is correct for every upholstery job.

Before ordering, identify:

  • The required working or open time
  • Whether repositioning is necessary
  • The size of the bonded area
  • Expected heat exposure
  • Whether the finished component will flex

Use spray adhesive where fast, even coverage across a suitable larger surface is required.

Use high-temperature spray adhesive for compatible vehicle and heat-exposed applications where the product specification supports it.

Use PVA for appropriate close-fitting timber joints.

Use fabric glue for compatible textile and trim applications.

Use hot melt where a rapid set is useful and the materials can tolerate the application temperature.

Where a mechanical fastening is required, do not replace it with glue merely because the adhesive is easier to reach.

Preparing Surfaces Before Bonding

Adhesives perform best on properly prepared surfaces.

Before applying glue:

  • Remove dust and loose material
  • Remove incompatible grease, polish or silicone
  • Allow damp materials to dry
  • Check old adhesive is sound or remove it
  • Repair damaged substrate
  • Test delicate materials
  • Protect surrounding finished surfaces
  • Prepare clamps or positioning aids in advance

Do not use an aggressive solvent to clean a surface unless both the substrate and later adhesive are compatible with it.

Residue from a cleaner can interfere with adhesion. Allow prepared surfaces to dry fully before bonding.

Adhesive Open Time, Tack Time and Cure Time

These terms describe different stages of adhesive performance.

Open time is the period during which the adhesive remains suitable for joining after application.

Tack time is the waiting period required before coated surfaces should be brought together.

Initial grab describes the early holding strength after the surfaces meet.

Cure time is the period required for the adhesive to develop its intended final properties.

A bond that feels secure after a few seconds may not yet be fully cured.

Follow the instructions for the exact adhesive. Joining too early, too late or loading the component before full cure can weaken the result.

Working Safely with Aerosols and Adhesives

Read the product label and current safety information before use.

Many workshop aerosols and solvent-based adhesives require effective ventilation and careful control of ignition sources.

When using these products:

  • Work in suitable ventilation
  • Avoid breathing vapour or spray mist
  • Keep away from flames, sparks and hot surfaces
  • Do not smoke in the working area
  • Wear the specified protective equipment
  • Keep containers closed when not in use
  • Store products as directed
  • Do not puncture or burn aerosol cans
  • Keep products away from children
  • Follow workplace COSHH procedures where applicable
  • Dispose of containers and residues correctly

For professional and repeated use, product safety data should form part of a proper workplace assessment. Safety data alone does not replace an assessment of how the product is actually being used in the workroom.

Hot melt equipment presents a different hazard. Molten adhesive and the metal nozzle can cause burns. Place a hot glue gun on a suitable stand, keep the cable clear and allow the tool to cool before storage.

Cleaning Adhesive Equipment and Spillages

Clean equipment using only the method recommended for the adhesive and tool.

Do not attempt to remove cured adhesive by flooding electrical equipment or hot glue guns with solvent.

For aerosol nozzles, follow the manufacturer’s clearing instructions. Do not insert sharp objects into a pressurised can.

Deal with spillages promptly using the product’s safety guidance. Keep contaminated cloths and waste away from heat and ignition sources where required.

Do not return used or contaminated adhesive to its original container.
