Understanding M8 and M10 Threads

Both fittings create an internal furniture thread, but their installation and holding methods differ.

A T nut has a broad flange and gripping prongs. It is often fitted from the back of the timber so tightening the bolt pulls the flange against the frame.

A D nut is inserted into a prepared hole and relies on its external form to resist movement and rotation.

The best choice depends on:

Wood-to-metal dowel screws have a wood-screw thread at one end and a machine thread at the other.

They can be used to attach compatible furniture legs, feet or components to timber where a projecting metric thread is required.

The wood-threaded end is installed into the timber, leaving the machine thread available to receive a nut, insert or threaded furniture component.

A screw should fit the bracket hole correctly. A head that is too small may pull through, while an oversized countersunk head can distort a flat bracket.

Pilot holes can reduce the risk of splitting timber and help position screws accurately, particularly near frame edges or in harder wood.

The correct pilot-hole size depends on the screw and material. It should allow the threaded portion to grip without forcing the timber apart.

Avoid overtightening. A power driver can strip a timber hole or distort a lightweight bracket remarkably efficiently and then sit there looking innocent.

Finish tightening critical fittings with appropriate control.

Matching Threaded Components

Threaded furniture components must match in diameter and thread form.

An M8 nut needs a compatible M8 bolt or stud. An M10 component needs M10.

Do not mix metric and imperial hardware based on approximate appearance. A partly compatible thread may begin to engage and then bind or damage both components.

Where resistance is encountered:
