The correct adhesive depends on the materials being joined, the strength required, the size of the bonded area and how the finished component will be used. No one glue should be treated as suitable for every fabric, foam, timber, plastic or furniture repair.

PVA performs best where the two surfaces fit closely together. It should not be expected to bridge large gaps, replace missing timber or repair a loose joint without proper preparation.

Preparing Timber for PVA Glue

Before applying PVA wood glue:

  • Clean away dust and debris
  • Check that the timber is dry
  • Repair splits and damaged material
  • Test the joint without glue
  • Prepare clamps before applying adhesive
  • Make sure both surfaces fit closely

A joint that does not fit correctly while dry is unlikely to become a good joint merely because more glue has been added.

Applying PVA Wood Glue

Clamping pressure should bring the two surfaces into close contact. Excessive pressure can force too much adhesive from the joint, while insufficient pressure may leave gaps.

Remove excess glue according to the product instructions before it hardens on visible timber or upholstery material.

Allow the joint to remain supported for the specified period and avoid placing it under full load before the adhesive has cured.

PVA Drying and Curing

Drying time can be affected by:

Claims that a PVA bonds every type of plastic or laminate should be treated carefully. Smooth or non-porous surfaces may provide little for a standard PVA adhesive to grip, and different plastics can behave very differently.

Where bonding laminate, plastic or another non-porous surface:

  • Check whether surface abrasion is required

The trim should lie naturally in position without being stretched excessively.

Apply the adhesive carefully and keep it away from visible edges. A line of dried glue emerging around a decorative braid rather defeats the purpose of decorative braid.

Where the trim must carry tension or remain securely fitted under heavy use, stitching, gimp pins, staples or another mechanical fixing may also be required.

Hot Melt Glue Guns

Hot melt glue guns heat a solid adhesive stick and dispense the molten glue through a nozzle.

The adhesive begins setting as it cools, providing a relatively fast initial bond without the drying period associated with many liquid adhesives.

A cordless or temporarily cord-free gun can provide easier access around large furniture, shaped components and areas away from a convenient socket.

Check how the particular cordless system operates. Some tools contain a battery, while others heat on a powered base and are then removed for limited cordless use.

Return a base-heated tool to its stand as instructed so it remains at the correct operating temperature.

Rapid EG212 Hot Melt Glue Gun

The Rapid EG212 Hot Melt Glue Gun is intended for smaller quantities of adhesive and controlled repair or assembly work.

It uses compatible 12mm glue sticks and reaches operating temperature after a short warm-up period.

This makes it a suitable starting point for:

Use the tool with glue sticks of the correct diameter and formulation.

AM-Tech Cordless Glue Gun

The AM-Tech S1845 Cordless Glue Gun is supplied with a charging or heating base and detachable cable, allowing the tool to be used without a trailing cable for suitable periods.

It is intended for compatible 11mm glue sticks.

A professional higher-output glue gun can be useful where greater quantities of adhesive must be applied consistently.

Hot Melt Glue Sticks

The current hot melt glue sticks are supplied as a 1kg bundle containing approximately 34 clear sticks.

Each stick is described as:

  • Approximately 12mm in diameter
  • Approximately 300mm long
  • Intended for compatible 12mm hot melt glue guns

Glue-stick diameter must match the applicator.

A stick that is too large may not enter the gun. A stick that is too small may feed poorly, allow molten adhesive to flow backwards or fail to engage correctly with the trigger mechanism.

Glue-Stick Diameter

Common glue-stick sizes include:

  • Approximately 7mm
  • Approximately 11mm
  • Approximately 12mm
  • Larger industrial formats

The nominal measurement can vary slightly between brands, so use the tool manufacturer’s recommendation.

The current Livedale 12mm sticks are suitable for the Rapid EG212 and other guns specifically designed for that format.

They should not automatically be presented as compatible with the AM-Tech S1845, which is specified for 11mm sticks.

Glue-Stick Formulation

Diameter is only one part of glue-stick compatibility.

Hot melt sticks can also differ in:

  • Operating temperature
  • Open time
  • Setting speed
  • Viscosity
  • Colour
  • Flexibility
  • Bond strength
  • Intended substrates
  • Heat resistance
  • Low-temperature performance

A general-purpose clear stick may suit many ordinary tasks but may not provide the best result for every plastic, textile, timber, metal or heat-exposed application.

Check both the gun and the adhesive formulation.

Feeding Glue Sticks Correctly

Insert the glue stick through the rear of the gun and allow the tool to reach operating temperature before forcing the trigger.

Do not push an unsuitable stick into the mechanism.

When one stick becomes short, a second compatible stick can normally be inserted behind it according to the tool instructions.

Do not pull a partly melted glue stick backwards out of a hot gun unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. This can damage the feed system or draw molten adhesive into the rear of the tool.

PVA, Fabric Glue or Hot Melt?

Choose the adhesive according to the task.

Choose PVA wood glue for:

None of these should automatically replace screws, staples, tacks, sewing or properly constructed furniture joints where a mechanical or structural connection is required.

Choosing the Correct Adhesive

Before ordering, identify:

  • Both materials being joined
  • Whether the surfaces are porous
  • Required strength
  • Size of the bonded area
  • Amount of movement or flexing
  • Heat exposure
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Required working time
  • Required setting speed
  • Whether the adhesive will remain visible
  • Future cleaning or maintenance
  • Whether the connection carries structural load

The phrase “strong glue” is not a complete specification.

An adhesive can bond one material extremely well and perform poorly on another. It may also create a strong initial grab but soften when exposed to heat, moisture or repeated movement.

Preparing Surfaces for Adhesive

Good preparation improves the chance of a dependable bond.

Before applying adhesive:

  • Remove dust and debris
  • Remove loose old glue
  • Remove oil, grease and silicone contamination
  • Allow damp surfaces to dry
  • Repair damaged substrate

Do not use an aggressive cleaner or solvent unless it is compatible with both the surface and the adhesive that will follow.

Residue from an unsuitable cleaner can prevent the new adhesive from bonding correctly.

Hot Melt Working and Setting Time

Hot melt adhesive begins cooling as soon as it leaves the nozzle.

The usable working time depends on:

  • Glue-stick formulation
  • Application temperature
  • Amount applied
  • Surface temperature
  • Room temperature
  • Material conductivity
  • Size of the components
  • Time taken to bring the surfaces together

Apply the adhesive only when the second component is ready to be positioned.

Bring the materials together within the adhesive’s working time and hold them as required while the bond develops.

Cold metal and other heat-conductive materials may cause the adhesive to set particularly quickly.

A thick bead remains hot and workable for longer than a very thin film, but it can also create a raised joint or visible lump.

Hot Melt Adhesive and Upholstery Materials

Take particular care when applying hot melt near foam, vinyl, synthetic fabric and finished furniture surfaces.

Molten adhesive can:

  • Melt or distort sensitive materials
  • Mark vinyl
  • Soak through open-weave fabric
  • Create a hard ridge
  • Burn foam
  • Leave a visible lump
  • Damage polished or painted finishes

Test the complete material combination before treating the finished item.

Hot melt is often best used for controlled trim and assembly work rather than broad-area upholstery bonding.

Using Glue Guns Safely

Hot melt glue and the applicator nozzle can cause serious burns.

When using a glue gun:

  • Place it on a stable heat-resistant surface
  • Use the supplied stand
  • Keep the nozzle away from hands and cables
  • Do not touch molten adhesive
  • Keep loose fabric away from the hot nozzle
  • Do not leave the tool unattended while powered
  • Disconnect it after use
  • Allow it to cool before storage
  • Inspect the cable and casing regularly
  • Keep it away from children
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

Do not attempt to cool hot adhesive by touching or wiping it with bare fingers.

Where practical, keep clean cold water available for immediate first aid and follow appropriate burn-treatment guidance if contact occurs.

Do not use a damaged electrical glue gun.

Storing PVA and Fabric Glue

Keep liquid adhesives in their original labelled containers.

Store them:

  • With the lid securely closed
  • Away from contamination
  • At the temperature stated by the manufacturer
  • Away from freezing where instructed
  • Out of direct sunlight
  • Away from children
  • Separate from food and drink

Do not return contaminated adhesive to the main container.

Clean the bottle opening before replacing the cap so dried glue does not prevent a proper seal.

Record the date opened where large workroom containers may remain in use for a long period.

Storing Glue Guns and Sticks

Allow the glue gun to cool completely before placing it in storage.

Store glue sticks:

  • Clean and dry
  • Protected from dust
  • Away from excessive heat
  • In their original packaging
  • Clearly labelled by size
  • Separate from incompatible stick formats

Dust and workshop debris on a glue stick can be carried into the feed mechanism and nozzle.

Keeping 11mm and 12mm sticks together in one unlabelled box is an excellent system until somebody needs to use one.
