Preparing the Raw Timber
Good preparation helps achieve a more even furniture finish.
Before applying stain, paint or another finish:
- Make sure the timber is clean and dry
- Lightly sand where required
- Remove sanding dust before application
- Test the chosen finish on a discreet area
- Apply the product evenly
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- Allow the finish to dry fully before continuing with the upholstery
Where a natural timber appearance is preferred, browse Light Fast Stains for suitable furniture staining options.
Standard or Premier Footstool Frame?
The Standard and Premier stools provide two different frame sizes.
Standard Footstool Frame
Choose the Raw Standard Stool where:
- A compact 460mm × 300mm frame is required
- A smaller upholstered top is preferred
- Floor space is limited
- The timber needs a bespoke finish
- The proportions suit the furniture it will accompany
Premier Footstool Frame
For a larger unfinished frame, see the Raw Premier Stool 500mm × 335mm.
The Premier version provides a larger 500mm × 335mm frame, making it better suited where a more substantial upholstered footstool is required.
Raw, Cream or Mahogany Standard Footstool?
The Standard frame is available in several finishes.
Raw Standard Stool
The Raw Standard Stool is supplied unfinished, allowing the visible timber to be stained, painted or finished to suit the project.
Cream Standard Stool
The Cream Standard Stool 460mm × 300mm provides the same compact frame size with a light ready-finished appearance.
Mahogany Standard Stool
The Mahogany Standard Stool 460mm × 300mm provides the same frame size with a darker traditional finish.
Standard or Queen Anne Footstool?
For a more decorative traditional leg style, consider the Raw Queen Anne Footstool 460mm × 300mm.
Both use a 460mm × 300mm frame, but the finished appearance is very different.
Choose the Raw Standard Stool where a simpler frame and more understated leg style are preferred.
Choose the Raw Queen Anne Footstool where the shaped traditional legs are intended to form a more prominent part of the finished furniture.
Supplied with 3″ Upholstery Foam
A 3″ foam pad is included with the frame, providing the main cushioning layer for the upholstered top.
Additional materials may include:
- Polyester wadding
- Upholstery fabric or vinyl
- Base cloth
- Upholstery staples
- Spray adhesive
- Decorative trim or piping
Browse Polyester Wadding for fibre wrap that can be fitted over the foam to soften the edges and create a fuller upholstered profile.
For the finished covering, browse Vinyl & Fabric.
Adding Polyester Wadding
Polyester wadding can be fitted over the supplied foam before the final upholstery covering is applied.
It can help:
- Soften the foam edges
- Create a fuller upholstered appearance
- Reduce hard lines beneath the fabric
- Improve the transition around corners and edges
- Produce a smoother finished profile
For a practical upholstery option, see 27″ Wide 135g (4½oz) Fibre Cushion Wrap.

A typical upholstery process may include:

- Assemble and check the wooden frame.
- Position the supplied foam.
- Add polyester wadding where required.
- Measure and cut the upholstery covering.
- Position the fabric evenly over the foam and frame.

Finishing the Underside
Once the main upholstery work is complete, the underside can be covered with suitable furniture base cloth.
Black Dipryl / Corovin provides a neat covering beneath upholstered furniture and helps produce a clean finished appearance.
Suitable upholstery staples can be used to secure fabric, wadding and base cloth to the timber frame.
71/10 Staples are available for use with compatible 71 Series upholstery staple guns.
Where required, Livedale Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive 500ml can be used for suitable foam and wadding applications.
Choosing Upholstery Fabric
Because the timber can be finished specifically for the project, the Raw Standard frame provides plenty of flexibility when choosing upholstery.
Consider:
- Fabric colour and pattern
- Intended furniture style
- Required timber finish
- Intended use
- Abrasion resistance
- Cleaning requirements
- Fabric thickness
- Whether piping or decorative trim will be added
Browse Vinyl & Fabric for upholstery covering options.
