Raw Timber for Bespoke Finishing

The unfinished European Beech frame gives you control over the final appearance of the visible woodwork.

The timber can be finished to suit:

  • Existing furniture
  • Upholstery fabric
  • Interior colour schemes
  • Traditional furniture
  • Contemporary furniture
  • Restoration projects
  • Bespoke furniture commissions

Depending on the required finish, the timber may be stained, sealed, lacquered, painted or polished.

Browse Woodcare, Stains & Lacquers for products suitable for finishing and maintaining wooden furniture.

Staining the Raw Beech Frame

Where a natural wood appearance is preferred, a suitable stain can be used to alter the colour of the raw timber while allowing the grain to remain visible.

Browse Light-Fast Wood Stains for furniture finishing options.

Before applying any finish:

  • Make sure the timber is clean and dry
  • Remove dust and loose fibres
  • Sand where required
  • Test the chosen finish on an inconspicuous area
  • Follow the manufacturer’s application instructions
  • Allow each coat to dry fully before continuing

The final appearance will depend on the timber, preparation method and product used.

Premier or Standard Footstool Frame?

The Premier and Standard stools provide two different frame sizes.

Premier Footstool Frame

Choose the Raw Premier Stool where:

  • A larger 500mm × 335mm frame is required
  • A more substantial upholstered top is preferred
  • The finished footstool needs to complement larger seating
  • The timber needs to be finished to a specific colour or style

Standard Footstool Frame

For a more compact unfinished frame, see the Raw Standard Stool 460mm × 300mm.

The Standard version provides a smaller 460mm × 300mm frame, making it suitable where a more compact upholstered footstool is required.

Raw, Cream or Mahogany Premier Footstool?

The Premier frame is available in different finishes.

Raw Premier Stool

The Raw Premier Stool is supplied unfinished, allowing the visible timber to be stained, painted or finished to suit the project.

Cream Premier Stool

The Cream Premier Stool 500mm × 335mm provides the same Premier frame size with a light ready-finished appearance.

Mahogany Premier Stool

The Mahogany Premier Stool 500mm × 335mm provides the same frame size with a darker traditional finish.

Supplied with 3″ Upholstery Foam

A 3″ foam pad is supplied with the Raw Premier frame, providing the main cushioning layer for the upholstered top.

Additional materials may include:

  • Polyester wadding
  • Upholstery fabric or vinyl
  • Base cloth
  • Upholstery staples
  • Spray adhesive
  • Decorative trim or piping

Browse Polyester Wadding for fibre wrap that can be fitted over the foam to soften the edges and create a fuller upholstered profile.

For the finished covering, browse Vinyl & Fabric.

Adding Polyester Wadding

Polyester wadding can be fitted over the supplied foam before the final upholstery covering is applied.

It can help:

  • Soften the foam edges
  • Create a fuller upholstered appearance
  • Reduce hard lines beneath the fabric
  • Improve the transition around corners and edges
  • Produce a smoother finished profile

For a practical upholstery option, see 27″ Wide 135g (4½oz) Fibre Cushion Wrap.

Upholstering the Raw Premier Footstool

The ready-made frame and supplied foam provide the basis for creating a finished upholstered footstool.

A typical upholstery process may include:

  1. Prepare and finish the raw timber where required.
  2. Assemble and check the wooden frame.
  3. Position the supplied foam.
  4. Add polyester wadding where required.
  5. Measure and cut the upholstery covering.
  6. Position the fabric evenly over the foam and frame.
  7. Secure the covering to the timber.
  8. Finish the corners neatly.
  9. Fit suitable base cloth underneath.
  10. Check that the completed stool sits level and secure.

For fastening materials, browse Staples & Tacks.

For specialist equipment, browse Upholstery Tools.

Finishing the Underside

Once the main upholstery work is complete, the underside of the stool can be finished with suitable furniture base cloth.

Black Dipryl / Corovin provides a neat covering beneath upholstered furniture and helps give the finished stool a clean professional appearance.

Suitable upholstery staples can be used to secure the fabric, wadding and base cloth to the timber frame.

71/10 Staples are available for use with compatible 71 Series upholstery staple guns.

Where required, Livedale Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive 500ml can be used for suitable foam and wadding applications.

Looking for a Traditional Footstool Style?

For a more decorative shaped-leg design, consider the Raw Queen Anne Footstool 460mm × 300mm.

The Queen Anne design provides a more traditional appearance where the shape of the wooden legs forms a prominent part of the finished footstool.

For the complete selection, browse Footstool Frames.
