C.S. Osborne No.87 Castor Socket Removal Tool

The C.S. Osborne No.87 Castor Socket Removal Tool is a specialist upholstery and furniture repair tool designed for removing compatible castor sockets from wooden furniture legs and frames.

The hardened threaded end screws securely into the existing socket, allowing the built-in slide hammer to apply a controlled outward pulling action. This provides a much more effective method of removing stubborn castor sockets than trying to prise them out with general hand tools.

Ideal for professional upholsterers, furniture repairers and restoration workshops replacing worn or damaged furniture castors and sockets.

Removing Furniture Castor Sockets

Castor sockets can become difficult to remove after years of use, particularly where they have become tight, distorted or embedded firmly into the timber.

The No.87 is designed to grip the socket from the inside. Once the threaded end has been screwed securely into the socket, the slide hammer can be used progressively to draw the socket out of the furniture.

Before use:

  • Remove the existing castor from the socket
  • Check the condition of the surrounding timber
  • Make sure the threaded end is compatible with the socket
  • Screw the tool securely into position
  • Use the slide hammer progressively rather than applying excessive force
  • Inspect the socket hole and surrounding timber once removed

Where possible, retain the old socket so that its dimensions can be compared with the replacement fitting.

Replacing Castors After Socket Removal

Once the old socket has been removed, check the replacement castor and socket carefully before fitting.

Livedale stocks a range of replacement socket-mounted furniture castors within the Kenrick & Poly Castors range.

Popular options include the Kenrick 40mm Shepherd Mini Castors & Sockets for a compact all-metal replacement and the larger Kenrick 50mm Shepherd Castors & Sockets.

For furniture where appearance is important, the Chrome Kenrick 50mm Shepherd Castors & Sockets provide a more decorative finish.

For an economical everyday replacement, see the 40mm Polycastor & Sockets.

Always check the stem, socket and overall castor dimensions before ordering, as similar-looking furniture castors are not necessarily interchangeable.
