Description

Brass Box Castor

The Brass Box Castor is a traditional decorative furniture castor designed for wooden furniture legs where a box-end or toe-style fitting is required.

It is particularly suited to furniture where the castor remains visible and forms part of the overall appearance of the piece, making it a strong choice for traditional furniture manufacture, upholstery repair and restoration work.

Livedale currently offers this castor in 29mm (1⅛”) and 32mm (1¼”) sizes, with a choice of brass, antique and decorative wheel options.

Traditional Box-End Castor for Furniture Legs

Box castors differ visually and mechanically from the more common cup, grip-neck and screw-plate castors.

Their more enclosed decorative form makes them particularly appropriate for:

  • Traditional chairs
  • Occasional tables
  • Cabinets
  • Wooden furniture legs
  • Antique-style furniture
  • Period furniture
  • Furniture restoration
  • Reproduction furniture
  • Upholstery repair work

This style is particularly useful where maintaining the traditional appearance of the furniture is just as important as providing a working castor.

For other furniture castor styles, browse the wider Furniture Castors range.

Brass Box Castor Sizes

The product is currently available in:

  • 29mm (1⅛”)
  • 32mm (1¼”)

For the 29mm version, the existing Livedale specification confirms:

  • Wheel diameter: 29mm
  • Overall height: approx. 75mm

The current page does not give a separate overall-height measurement for the 32mm option, so I would not invent one.

That is worth keeping in the new copy until the 32mm version has physically been measured.

Replacing an Existing Box Castor

Older furniture often uses fittings that look similar but differ considerably once removed.

Before ordering a replacement box castor, check:

  • Wheel diameter
  • Overall castor height
  • Width and shape of the furniture leg
  • Existing fixing arrangement
  • Position of the existing castor
  • Condition of the timber
  • Whether the existing castor is genuinely a box-end style

Where possible, remove one existing castor and compare it directly with the dimensions of the replacement.

If you’re unsure which style you need, contact Livedale before ordering.

Choosing the Correct Brass Furniture Castor

The Brass Box Castor is only one of several traditional castor styles available.

Box Castors

This product is the choice where the furniture requires a traditional box-end or toe-style castor.

It has a distinctly different appearance from conventional round cup, plate or socket-mounted castors.

Claw Castors

For an even more decorative traditional fitting, see the Brass Claw Castor.

This is probably the closest stylistic alternative to the Box Castor within the brass range.

Cup Castors

Where the castor needs to fit around a suitable wooden furniture leg, see the 25mm (1″) Brass Cup Castor or larger 32mm (1¼”) Brass Cup Castor.

Grip Neck Castors

Where the furniture uses a stem-and-socket fitting, see the 25mm (1″) Brass Grip Neck Castor or 32mm (1¼”) Brass Grip Neck Castor.

Screw Plate Castors

Where a castor needs to mount directly beneath the furniture using a fixing plate, see the 25mm (1″) Brass Screw Plate Castor or 32mm (1¼”) Brass Screw Plate Castor.

Square Cup Castors

For suitable square furniture legs, see the Brass Square Cup Castor.

Brass Box Castor Finishes & Wheel Options

The Brass Box Castor is currently available in:

  • Antique
  • Brass
  • Brown Wheel
  • White Wheel

These options give a useful choice when matching the castor to existing furniture hardware or recreating the appearance of an older piece.

I would change the WooCommerce variation label from “Colour” to “Finish / Wheel Option”, as that describes the choices much more accurately.

Box Castor or Claw Castor?

These are the two more decorative traditional castors within the Livedale brass range.

Choose the Brass Box Castor where the furniture requires the more enclosed box-end/toe-style fitting.

Choose the Brass Claw Castor where a more ornate claw-style appearance is appropriate.

Both are much more decorative than a standard plate or grip-neck castor and are particularly relevant to traditional furniture and restoration work.

Measure Before Ordering

With older and traditional furniture, don’t assume that an existing castor conforms exactly to a modern nominal size.

Check:

  • Wheel diameter
  • Overall height
  • Furniture leg dimensions
  • Castor body dimensions
  • Existing fixing arrangement
  • Condition of the timber
  • Number of castors required

For measuring equipment, browse Rulers & Tape Measures.

A few minutes with a tape measure is considerably easier than discovering that four beautifully polished brass castors belong on somebody else’s chair.

Brass Box Castors for Trade & Furniture Restoration

Brass box castors are particularly relevant to:

  • Professional upholsterers
  • Antique furniture restorers
  • Furniture repair workshops
  • Furniture manufacturers
  • Chair makers
  • Cabinet makers
  • Traditional furniture specialists
