Description
8mm Scrim Foam for Automotive Upholstery and Trimming
This 8mm scrim foam is a 60″ wide padded backing material for automotive upholstery, vehicle trimming, quilting, stitched panels and decorative upholstery work.
A thin scrim is laminated to one side of the foam to help stabilise it during handling and protect the foam from tearing when sewn.
At 8mm thick, it provides a noticeably fuller padded effect than 3mm or 6mm scrim foam, making it particularly useful where the padding needs to contribute visibly to the shape and depth of the finished panel.
The material can be sewn or glued and used behind suitable leather, vinyl, leatherette and upholstery fabrics.

What Is 8mm Scrim Foam Used For?
8mm scrim-backed foam is used where a more visible level of padding is required beneath a finishing material.
Typical applications include:
- Car seats
- Vehicle door cards
- Automotive trim panels
- Seat centre panels
- Seat bolsters
- Headrests
- Campervan interiors
- Motorhome panels
- Quilted upholstery
- Diamond stitching
- Fluted panels
- Channelled upholstery
- Leather backing
- Vinyl backing
- Fabric backing
- Furniture panels
- Headboards
- Decorative upholstered wall panels
The increased foam depth gives stitched and quilted work more definition while the scrim backing supports the foam during sewing.
8mm Scrim Foam for Car Seats
8mm automotive scrim foam is well suited to car seat sections where a fuller padded appearance is required.
It can be used behind:
- Automotive fabric
- Leather
- Vinyl
- Leatherette
- Faux suede
Compared with thinner scrim foams, the extra depth creates more body beneath the cover and allows decorative stitching to produce stronger visual definition.
This makes it particularly useful for:
- Seat centre panels
- Bolster sections
- Headrests
- Quilted inserts
- Custom automotive upholstery
Browse Automotive & Headlining Fabrics for suitable vehicle interior coverings.
8mm Foam for Door Cards and Interior Panels
Door cards and automotive trim panels can be given a noticeably padded finish using 8mm scrim foam.
The additional depth is useful for:
- Custom door cards
- Decorative trim panels
- Side panels
- Campervan interiors
- Motorhome panels
- Parcel shelves
- Feature inserts
Because 8mm is thicker than general-purpose 3mm or 6mm padding, check that the added depth will not interfere with clips, switches, handles or surrounding trim.

8mm Scrim Foam for Quilting and Diamond Stitching
Scrim foam is particularly useful for decorative stitched upholstery because the foam creates depth while the scrim helps stabilise the material.
8mm thickness is a strong choice for:
- Diamond quilting
- Cross-hatch stitching
- Parallel channels
- Horizontal quilting
- Vertical fluting
- Custom car interiors
- Leather seat panels
- Vinyl seat sections
- Upholstered wall panels
The combination of stitch spacing and foam thickness determines how pronounced the finished pattern appears.
Compared with 3mm or 6mm foam, 8mm produces deeper relief and greater visual definition.
8mm Foam Behind Leather
8mm scrim foam can create a substantial padded effect beneath leather.
It is particularly useful where the leather panel requires:
- Increased body
- Softer feel
- Visible quilting
- Decorative stitching
- Greater panel depth
For very subtle leather padding, 3mm or 6mm may be more appropriate.
For stronger definition and a fuller upholstered appearance, 8mm provides a useful step up.
8mm Foam Behind Vinyl and Leatherette
Vinyl and leatherette can also be combined with 8mm scrim foam where a fuller padded appearance is required.
Applications include:
- Car seats
- Door cards
- Decorative trim
- Furniture panels
- Campervan interiors
- Custom upholstery
The scrim backing is especially useful where the foam and face material will be stitched together.
8mm Foam Behind Upholstery Fabric
8mm scrim foam can also be used behind suitable upholstery fabrics.
It can add body and softness to:
- Chair backs
- Headboards
- Bed panels
- Furniture arms
- Upholstered wall panels
- Decorative furniture sections
- Quilted fabric panels
This makes the product useful beyond automotive trimming and into general furniture and contract upholstery work.
Why Choose 8mm Scrim Foam?
Choose 8mm scrim-backed foam when you need:
- Noticeable upholstery padding
- More depth than 6mm foam
- Defined quilting
- Decorative stitching
- Automotive seat backing
- Door-card padding
- Trim-panel padding
- Leather backing
- Vinyl backing
- Fabric backing
- A fuller upholstered appearance
It sits in the middle of the range between moderate 6mm padding and the deeper effects produced by 10mm and 12mm foam.
6mm or 8mm Scrim Foam?
For slightly lighter padding, choose 6mm Scrim Foam 54″ Wide.
Choose 6mm scrim foam when you need:
- Moderate padding
- Greater flexibility
- Less panel thickness
- General automotive trim work
- Controlled quilting
Choose 8mm scrim foam when you need:
- Greater body
- More visible padding
- Deeper quilting
- Stronger stitch definition
- A fuller finished panel
The 8mm foam is the natural next step where 6mm does not provide enough depth.
8mm or 10mm Scrim Foam?
For an even deeper padded finish, choose 10mm Scrim Foam 60″ Wide.
Choose 8mm where you want clearly visible padding while still keeping the finished panel relatively manageable.
Choose 10mm where:
- Greater quilting depth is required
- Strong relief is part of the design
- Additional softness is wanted
- The finished panel can accommodate extra thickness
8mm or 12mm Scrim Foam?
12mm Scrim Foam 60″ Wide provides an even fuller result.
The 12mm option is more suitable where deep padding becomes an important visual feature of the finished upholstery.
8mm remains the more versatile choice for customers wanting pronounced but not excessive depth.
Need Thinner Scrim Foam?
For flatter trim work, choose 3mm Scrim Foam 60″ Wide.
3mm is particularly useful for:
- Headlining
- Thin seat facings
- Light door-card padding
- Subtle quilting
- Minimal added bulk

The added foam depth can help transform a flat trim board into a more upholstered interior feature.

Bonding 8mm Scrim Foam
Scrim foam can be glued as well as sewn.
Adhesive selection should take account of:
- Foam type
- Covering material
- Substrate
- Location
- Operating temperature
Vehicle interiors can become particularly hot, so use an adhesive suitable for automotive trimming where high-temperature resistance is required.
For suitable applications, choose Trimbond High Temperature Spray Adhesive.
Before bonding:
- Remove old degraded foam
- Remove loose adhesive residue
- Clean the substrate
- Test adhesive compatibility first
- Apply adhesive evenly
- Avoid soaking the foam
- Allow the correct tack time
- Position carefully
- Apply even pressure
- Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions
Cutting and Shaping 8mm Scrim Foam
8mm scrim foam can be cut using suitable sharp upholstery tools.
For clean results:
- Measure accurately
- Mark the panel shape
- Use a sharp blade or cutting tool
- Cut on a suitable work surface
- Avoid stretching the foam
- Test-fit before sewing or bonding
Browse Knives & Foam Cutters for suitable cutting equipment.
For vehicle-specific fitting equipment, browse Car Trimming Tools.
Scrim Foam Is a Surface Padding Material
8mm scrim foam is designed as a backing, surface-padding and finishing material.
It should not be confused with the main upholstery foam responsible for supporting a seat cushion.
It is not intended to replace supportive foam in:
- Sofa seat cushions
- Chair seat cushions
- Bench cushions
- Mattress cores
- Main vehicle-seat foam structures
For supportive bespoke upholstery foam, use Foam Cut to Size.
