Description
32mm (1¼”) Brass Grip Neck Castor
The 32mm (1¼”) Brass Grip Neck Castor is a traditional solid brass furniture castor supplied with a matching socket and designed for furniture using a stem-and-socket fixing.
With a larger 32mm wheel than the 25mm version, it is suitable for chairs, armchairs, sofas, footstools and other upholstered furniture where a slightly larger and more prominent castor is required.
The grip neck stem pushes into the supplied socket and locks securely into position while allowing the castor to swivel through 360°. The wheel measures 32mm in diameter, with approximately 40mm height to the stem and a stem length of approximately 35mm.
For other sizes and fixing styles, browse the complete Brass Castors range.
Larger Grip Neck Castor for Upholstered Furniture
The 32mm Grip Neck Castor works on the same principle as the smaller 25mm version but provides a larger wheel and greater finished height.
Typical applications include:
- Traditional armchairs
- Upholstered chairs
- Sofas and settees
- Footstools
- Occasional furniture
- Furniture restoration
- Replacement furniture castors
- New upholstered furniture manufacture
Where a smaller castor is more suitable, see the 25mm (1″) Brass Grip Neck Castor.

32mm Brass Grip Neck Castor Dimensions
The key dimensions are approximately:
- Wheel diameter: 32mm (1¼”)
- Height to stem: 40mm
- Stem length: 35mm
- Required drilled hole: approximately 10mm
- Fixing: grip neck stem and socket
- Movement: full 360° swivel
The matching socket is supplied with the castor.
When replacing an existing castor, check the stem, socket and finished height as well as the wheel diameter.
How Does a Grip Neck Castor Fit?
A grip neck castor uses a socket fitted into the wooden furniture leg or frame.
An approximately 10mm hole is drilled in the correct position and the socket is carefully fitted into the hole. The castor stem then pushes into the socket and locks securely while remaining free to swivel.
Before fitting:
- Check that the timber is sound
- Mark the drilling position accurately
- Drill straight into the leg or frame
- Avoid drilling too close to an edge
- Fit the socket carefully
- Push the castor fully into position
- Check that the castor swivels freely
- Check that all castors sit evenly once fitted
If you are unsure whether your furniture uses a grip neck and socket fitting, contact Livedale before ordering.
Replacing Existing Grip Neck Castors & Sockets
When replacing an existing grip neck castor, it is worth checking the condition of the old socket as well as the castor itself.
Furniture castor sockets can become:
- Worn
- Loose
- Bent
- Damaged
- Difficult to remove
The new castor is supplied with a matching socket, so a damaged existing socket can be replaced where required.
For professional workshops dealing with stubborn existing sockets, the C.S. Osborne No.87 Castor Socket Removal Tool is specifically designed for removing compatible furniture castor sockets.
This is a particularly useful complementary product for upholsterers and furniture repair workshops regularly replacing grip neck castors.
25mm or 32mm Grip Neck Castor?
Livedale stocks grip neck brass castors with both 25mm and 32mm wheels.
Choose the 32mm Grip Neck Castor where:
- The existing castor has a 32mm wheel
- A larger visible castor suits the furniture
- The additional finished height is appropriate
- The furniture proportions suit the larger wheel
Choose the 25mm (1″) Brass Grip Neck Castor where a smaller castor is required.
The 25mm version has approximately 30mm height to the stem, compared with approximately 40mm on this 32mm version, while both use an approximately 35mm stem.
When replacing existing furniture castors, matching the old fitting and dimensions is normally the safest starting point.
Choosing the Correct Furniture Castor
The fixing method matters just as much as wheel size.

Measure Before Ordering
Do not choose a replacement castor based on wheel diameter alone.
Check:
- Wheel diameter
- Stem length
- Stem diameter
- Socket type
- Existing drilled hole
- Finished castor height
- Existing fixing method
- Condition of the furniture leg or frame
For workshop measuring equipment, browse Rulers & Tape Measures.
With a grip neck castor, a wheel that looks correct is of little use if the stem and socket don’t match.
