Brass Square Cup Castor
The Brass Square Cup Castor is a traditional furniture castor designed specifically for square wooden furniture legs.
Rather than fitting into a socket or mounting underneath the furniture with a plate, the square brass cup fits over the end of the furniture leg and is secured through the cup using three screws.
Available in 25mm, 32mm and 45mm sizes, it provides a useful option for everything from smaller chairs and footstools through to furniture with considerably larger square legs.

These dimensions are particularly important when matching a replacement castor to an existing furniture leg.
Why the Cup Taper Matters
With this type of castor, the nominal size alone isn’t enough to determine whether it will fit.
The 25mm version, for example, measures approximately 25mm × 25mm internally at the top but narrows to approximately 20mm × 20mm at the base.
That means the furniture leg also needs to have a suitable shape and taper.
Before ordering:
- Measure the leg in both directions
- Check whether the leg tapers towards the bottom
- Measure the existing cup if replacing a castor
- Check the overall castor height
- Make sure the timber is sound enough for the fixing screws

How to Fit a Square Cup Castor
The square cup fits over the bottom of the wooden furniture leg and is then secured using three screws.
Before fitting:
- Check the furniture leg fits properly inside the cup
- Make sure the leg is square and suitably tapered
- Check the timber is sound
- Position the castor correctly before marking
- Use suitable pilot holes where required
- Secure all three fixing points
- Avoid overtightening screws into older or fragile timber
- Check that all castors sit evenly once fitted
If replacing existing castors, compare one of the originals with the replacement wherever possible.

Square Cup or Round Cup Castor?
This is one of the most important buying decisions with this type of furniture castor.
A square cup castor is intended to fit over a square furniture leg.
A round cup castor is intended for a compatible round or turned furniture leg.
The two shouldn’t be chosen simply on wheel diameter. The shape and internal dimensions of the cup need to match the furniture leg.
