Description

25mm (1″) Brass Grip Neck Castor

The 25mm (1″) Brass Grip Neck Castor is a traditional solid brass furniture castor supplied with a matching socket and designed for furniture that uses a stem-and-socket fixing.

Widely used on both traditional and modern upholstered furniture, it is suitable for chairs, armchairs, sofas, footstools and furniture restoration where a compact decorative castor with full swivel movement is required.

The grip neck stem pushes into the supplied socket and locks securely into position while allowing the castor to swivel through 360°.

Grip Neck Castors for Furniture Repair & Restoration

Grip neck castors are commonly used where the castor needs to push into a socket fitted into the furniture leg or frame.

Unlike a cup castor, which fits around the outside of a furniture leg, or a screw plate castor, which mounts underneath the furniture, a grip neck castor uses a stem inserted into a compatible socket.

Typical applications include:

  • Traditional armchairs
  • Upholstered chairs
  • Sofas and settees
  • Footstools
  • Occasional furniture
  • Furniture restoration
  • Replacement furniture castors
  • New upholstered furniture manufacture

For other furniture castor styles, browse the wider Furniture Castors range.

25mm Brass Grip Neck Castor Dimensions

The key dimensions are approximately:

  • Wheel diameter: 25mm (1″)
  • Height to the stem: 30mm
  • Stem length: 35mm
  • Required hole: approximately 10mm
  • Fixing: grip neck stem and socket
  • Movement: 360° swivel

The socket is supplied with the castor.

Always check the existing furniture fitting before ordering, particularly when replacing an older castor.

How Does a Grip Neck Castor Fit?

A grip neck castor works with a socket fitted into the wooden furniture leg or frame.

An approximately 10mm hole is drilled in the correct position and the socket is carefully fitted into the hole.

The castor stem then pushes into the socket. The grip neck locks into the socket while allowing the castor to rotate freely.

When fitting:

  • Check that the timber is sound
  • Mark the drilling position accurately
  • Drill straight into the furniture leg or frame
  • Avoid drilling too close to an edge
  • Fit the socket carefully without damaging the surrounding timber
  • Push the castor fully into the socket
  • Check that the castor swivels freely once installed

If you’re unsure whether your furniture uses this fitting, contact Livedale before ordering.

Replacing an Existing Grip Neck Castor

If the furniture already has grip neck castors, check both the castor and the socket.

Older sockets can become:

  • Loose
  • Worn
  • Bent
  • Damaged
  • Difficult to remove

If the existing socket is in good condition and compatible with the replacement castor, it may be possible to reuse it.

Where the socket is damaged or worn, replacing it with the new socket supplied with the castor can provide a more reliable fitting.

For professional workshops removing stubborn existing sockets, see the C.S. Osborne No.87 Castor Socket Removal Tool. It uses a threaded end and slide-hammer action specifically for removing compatible furniture castor sockets.

Choosing the Correct Furniture Castor

The fixing method is just as important as the wheel diameter when choosing a replacement furniture castor.

Grip Neck Castors

This product uses a stem and socket fixing.

For a larger wheel in the same basic fixing style, see the 32mm (1¼”) Brass Grip Neck Castor.

Cup Castors

If the castor needs to fit around the outside of a furniture leg rather than into a socket, see the 25mm (1″) Brass Cup Castor.

A larger 32mm (1¼”) Brass Cup Castor is also available.

Screw Plate Castors

If the castor needs to mount directly underneath the furniture using a fixing plate, see the 25mm (1″) Brass Screw Plate Castor.

A larger 32mm (1¼”) Brass Screw Plate Castor is also available.

Square Cup Castors

For suitable square or block-style furniture legs, see the Brass Square Cup Castor.

Screw Cup Castors

For furniture requiring a cup-style fitting secured differently from a standard cup castor, see the 32mm (1¼”) Brass Screw Cup Castor.

If in doubt, match the existing fixing rather than choosing a castor purely because the wheel looks similar.

25mm or 32mm Grip Neck Castor?

Livedale stocks grip neck brass castors in both 25mm and 32mm wheel sizes.

The correct choice will depend on:

  • Existing wheel diameter
  • Furniture size
  • Existing stem and socket arrangement
  • Required finished height
  • Appearance of the furniture

If replacing existing castors, use the old castor as your starting point and compare the dimensions carefully.

Measure Before Ordering

When replacing furniture castors, check more than the wheel diameter.

Measure or identify:

  • Wheel diameter
  • Stem length
  • Stem diameter
  • Socket type
  • Existing drilled hole
  • Overall castor height
  • Furniture leg or frame construction
  • Existing fixing method

For workshop measuring equipment, browse our Rulers & Tape Measures.

A castor that looks almost identical can still have completely the wrong fitting underneath.
